If you were listening to jazz albums in the early 1970s, chances are they came from Abe. While a student at Drake University, Abe owned a local record store. The store is long gone (as is his hair), but Abe’s passion for jazz is still growing!
Abe loves nothing better than sharing his favorite music with friends. Whether that’s making “Abe Selection” tapes and CDs or bringing music to Des Moines. In 1972, Abe brought Joe Farrell to Hoyt Sherman with a young Stanley Clarke and Steve Gadd. In 1984, he brought Al Cohn and Barry Harris to town for a rare duo performance. Several years ago, his family hosted pianist Jessica Williams (and along with John Krantz, brought her back for an SRO Civic Music event). In October
2006, he treated us to Trio-X, who returned in October 2008.
His passion for jazz is only matched by his passion for his profession (Abe is director of creative services for Trilix Marketing Group), his life as an accordion player and leader of The Java Jews, his volunteer work with the Community Jazz Center of Greater Des Moines and the Des Moines Jewish Community, and his family. After all, his wife Jackie, saw Sun Ra when she was 10 (this was a match made in heaven ... okay, Saturn); his son, Hayden, is a jazz bassist who is a regular feature of the CJC jam sessions; and his daughter, Langen, is majoring in music business at McNally Smith College of Music in St. Paul, MN. |
