About KFMG

Mission and Overview

KFMG-LP is a Low Power community radio station, broadcasting to the city of Des Moines, and suburbs, at 99.1 FM with tower, transmitter, studios and offices donated by and located in The Hotel Fort Des Moines, 10th and Walnut streets in downtown Des Moines, IA. KFMG is owned and operated by The Des Moines Community Radio Foundation, an Iowa not-for-profit corporation, authorized as at 501(c)(3) corporation for tax purposes by the Internal Revenue Service.

Ron Sorenson, former owner of KFMG-FM (1992-1996) is the General Manager of KFMG and President of The Des Moines Community Radio Foundation. A Board of Directors consisting of 14 persons from central Iowa sets overall policy and direction.

KFMG operates as "Your Community Voice" and actively assists a broad spectrum of central Iowa non-profit groups and organizations to inform residents about services, programs, projects and opportunities. This includes the local fine arts and cultural community, with specific emphasis on the local music community, both performers and promoters; the human services community, and the downtown community.

The primary goal of the station is to assist in making central Iowa a better place to live by providing information about and arts, entertainment and culture, and by playing the music we all love.

KFMG seeks to enlighten with both music and spoken word. From Public Service Announcements which actually see the light of day, to short-form and long-form discussion programs, KFMG will seek to inform, to illuminate, to educate, and to inspire.

The Music

KFMG's main musical format is called "Eclectic Triple A" (Adult Album Alternative). We are a melodic rock station with soul, a musical melting pot blending jazz and soul with rock and roll, stirring in some blues, acoustic, classical, and world beat, and flavoring with reggae and salsa. KFMG plays musicians who live in our town, and musicians who are coming to our town. The station displays music as diverse as our city and our listeners. We invite you to be one of them.
